I bought a 26 inch MTD snow blower 2 years ago. this would have been it's third season if it had started.

Not being able to pull start it I decided to use the handy dandy electric starter. No such luck. When I opened the switch cover one of the screw heads was sheared off leaving the power wire undone.

The cause of the motor not starting in the first place was that there was an inch of rust and sludge inside of the fuel tank.

How it got there I'll never know. But I do know that I will never purchase one of these machines again

Buy a 2 stage snowblower. Not a power shovel if you expect snowblower results.

These are only snow throwers. They do what they were made to do.

I have a 21 inch MTD, snowblower who's performance is lacking the ability to throw the snow and continues to jam up with snow even when i spray WD-40 oil down the shute.

Im going on year 5 of my 21" MTD. I bought it when I moved into my new house in spring and didnt use it until the next February.

Right out of the box, it would clog every foot or 2 and throw snow under a foot away. The next year I only used it once or twice with the same problem, then the blizzard hit the next year. The ears on the foldable handle flattened and bent like a tin can and I had to secure it with worm clamps and bailing wire. I went for the next 2 years where it wouldn't start but there was so little snow I didn't miss it.

Well this year we had 6" then 8" then 16" just outside of Chicago over a month and I FINALLY got it started today. My kids shoveled the drive yesterday but there was about an inch of drift and this *** thing clogged, as usual every 1-2 feet. If the snow is even SLIGHTLY damp it wont throw it over the side of the machine and clogs so much I spend more time clearing it than I would shoveling.

I'm taking it out to a field in the summer for death by buckshot. What a waste, I will NEVER buy an MTD item again.

The same thing happened to my 23mo. old Poulan Pro, Cost to repair, not covered by 2yr.

I bought my MTD in December of 08'. Had the carb replaced after during my 2nd season of using it.

This year, went out to start it for the first time and it would not start. Instead of wasting more money trying to fix it, I went out and bought a brand new John Deere snow machine. This thing will last forever.

I will never buy another MTD product.

Well, I purchased a MTD in 2005. I have to say, it sounds like I got lucky - I got 5 good years of use in 2+ feet of snow.

Last year it started not moving well, at randome and I was too lazy to look at it, plus we had a light snow winter, so no big deal. Last night I went out and it wouldn't move at all. one of the bolts on the front of the engine stripped out - and - it looks like the drive belt tensioner was being held by that bold. SO, I pushed the tensioner spring up to the next bolt and was able to clear the driveway.

The tensioner is now broken, along with the belt, and the next bolt up is not stripped out. I should also mention the $80 pulley the drive belt runs is all gouged up from the tensioner spring hitting it. I'll get this fixed for $150 or less and my time, but won't be buying another MTD.

The engine housing should have been cast or something else done better so these bolts don't strip out. For something you use for only 3-4 months out of the year, and you spend $1000+ on it, it should last 10-15 years!!

these units it is usually the carbureator that is the number one problem. i service for many home improvment stores.

first problem. needle has alluminum coating. yeah once gas is added coating seperates. needle swells and sticks.

leaks gas. next problem. even if you drain the fuel from these units after the winter season. go to restart next year.

unit will run on choke. once removed unit dies instantly. open the carb for inspection. pristine inside.

try to file a warranty on these units. DENIED. MTD within the first year of warranty will not cover a carbureator. wont even suggest it.

automatic customer neglect. time and time again. but we as the repair guys cant prove its a manufacturing defect. nor can we prove its customer neglect.I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT NOT NOT TO BUY A MTD PRODUCT.

LAWN MOWER OR SNOWBLOWER UNLESS IT HAS A KNOW QUALITY ENGINE ON IT. BRIGGS AND STRATTON OR, HONDA.

I did a lot of research on snow blowers before I purchased one. All of you writing comments on here complaining about MTD was helpful.

I began to find that most brands are now made by MTD. I also found a lot of problems with MTD, mainly with their cheap China engines and drive train. I did not stop with what I read. I went to the small engine repair shops in my area and spoke with the mechanics.

When I asked what I should by, the first answer everyone gave was not to buy MTD. They said find something with a Briggs engine or other name brand. Then they showed me the long line of MTD (or other brands made by them) snow blowers that all had common problems with the engines or drive train. Sad thing was, most of the machines were less than 3 years old.

Needless to say, I did not buy an MTD product.

Take a look at Husqvarna, Honda, Toro, or even Snapper. I also found out that John Deere will no longer be making snow blowers after this year.

Bought a 12 hp Troy bilt blower in December 2009. I noticed it did not run very good so took it to a mtd approved service center last week.

They assembled the handles properly, wired up the heated handle grips, the carburetor had defective parts so they put in a carburetor kit, replaced the clutch cable and two out of the four bolts holding the drive disc in place were stripped. This caused the drive disk to not wear evenly so they had to replace the drive disc as well. None of these items are covered under their 4 year Warranty. This makes me wonder as to what their warranty actually covers.

Talking to the mechanic I was told that the drive components for the auger and wheels are all identical.

The only thing that changes is the size of the body and motor.

Joined the Canadian Tire web site and reviewed my snow blower and mentioned all the issues with it. Because I did not give it 4 or more stars out of 5 they did not post my review.

Bought brand new MTD gold wouldn't work first year, took in for service and Mechanic replaced needle spring in carb. Gas leaking out of carb 10 mins.

after filling tank. This year used it once and had to take back for service again. Wouldn't start or run. Now needs whole new carb.

Warranty is still covering repairs but shovel is getting worn out. :( Stay away from these machines it's falling apart after using a total of 1 x in 2 years

I just purchased an MTD Gold Snowblower upon the recommendation of a neighbor. They have had an MTD for 4 years and outperformed all the snowblowers in the neighborhood.

If you have a steel tank, make sure you run all the gas out of the tank during the summer months as the gas we have now thickens and plugs it up. Don't blame the snowblowers for your lack of knowledge.

Guest

My tank is not plastic it is METAL

also there is a screen on the fuel filler neck. therefore it didn't get in through the PLASTIC gas can.

and the screw head just falling off the power wire inside the switch ?

Also I am here just outside of Boston so I know how the winter is this year... I've been shoveling it all.

Guest

most tanks are made of plastic so i assuming you gas can is rusty. i have had my mtd snow blower 4 years without a problem. we have had the snowiest winter here on the east coast this year and i probably would have died from a heart attack without it.

Guest

I feel your pain man. THis is my third year with my Stage 1 White Outdoor piece of ***. something has broken every year and now its falling apart...
